Pregnancy Due Date Calculator: Complete User Guide & Documentation
Everything you need to know about calculating your due date, understanding pregnancy timelines, and using the MedPlore Pregnancy Calculator.
Table of Contents
Welcome to the official documentation for the Pregnancy Due Date Calculator. Whether you are trying to conceive or have just received your big news, knowing your estimated due date (EDD) is one of the first and most exciting steps in your pregnancy journey. This tool is designed to provide you with a medically accurate estimate based on standard clinical guidelines.
What’s New in Version 2.0
We have significantly upgraded the calculator based on user feedback to make it more accurate, personal, and easy to use. Here are the key improvements in the latest version:
- IVF Support New: Dedicated calculation modes for IVF pregnancies, supporting both Day 3 and Day 5 embryo transfers for precise dating.
- Cycle Length Adjustment New: Not every woman has a 28-day cycle. You can now input your specific average cycle length to get a more accurate due date based on your Last Menstrual Period (LMP).
- Visual Timeline New: A beautiful, interactive progress bar that shows exactly where you are in your trimesters.
- Mobile-First Design: The entire interface has been redesigned to work perfectly on smartphones, so you can check your progress anywhere.
- Enhanced Milestones: We’ve expanded our database to include detailed weekly development facts and baby size comparisons (from poppy seed to pumpkin!).
- Privacy Focus: Your data is now stored locally on your device, so you don’t have to re-enter it every time you visit.
How to Use the Calculator
Our pregnancy due date calculator offers three distinct methods to estimate when your baby will arrive. Choose the method that best fits your knowledge of your cycle.
Method 1: Last Menstrual Period (LMP)
This is the most common method used by doctors. It assumes conception occurred roughly 14 days after the start of your last period.
- Select “First Day of Last Period (LMP)” from the dropdown menu.
- Enter the date of the first day of your last period.
- Optional: If you know your average cycle length is different from 28 days, adjust the “Average Cycle Length” field. This will shift your due date accordingly (e.g., a 30-day cycle adds 2 days to the due date).
Method 2: Conception Date
If you were tracking ovulation or know exactly when you conceived, this method can be more accurate than LMP.
- Select “Conception Date” from the dropdown.
- Enter the date you believe conception occurred.
- The calculator will add exactly 38 weeks (266 days) to this date.
Method 3: IVF Transfer Date
For pregnancies achieved through In Vitro Fertilization, standard LMP calculations are often inaccurate. Use this specialized mode instead.
- Select “IVF Transfer Date”.
- Choose your transfer type: Day 3 Transfer or Day 5 Transfer.
- Enter the date the transfer procedure took place.
- The tool calculates your due date by adding 266 days to the transfer date and subtracting the embryo age (3 or 5 days).

The Science Behind the Numbers
Understanding how your due date is calculated can help you manage expectations. Here is the medical science powering our tool.
Naegele’s Rule
The standard formula used worldwide is Naegele’s Rule. It calculates the Estimated Due Date (EDD) by adding one year, subtracting three months, and adding seven days to the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP). This equals exactly 280 days (40 weeks).
Gestational Age vs. Fetal Age
Did you know? When you are “4 weeks pregnant,” your baby is only about 2 weeks old.
Doctors measure pregnancy in Gestational Age, which starts from the first day of your last period, not the day of conception. This is because the exact moment of conception is hard to pinpoint, but a period is a visible event. Fetal Age refers to the actual age of the growing baby, which is typically 2 weeks less than the gestational age.
Understanding Your Results
Once you calculate your due date, you will see a dashboard of information. Here is how to interpret it:
The Trimesters
Pregnancy is divided into three distinct stages:
- First Trimester (Weeks 1-13): Rapid development, organ formation, and highest risk of miscarriage. By the end of this stage, the baby is fully formed but tiny.
- Second Trimester (Weeks 14-27): Often called the “honeymoon phase.” You may feel the first movements (quickening), and an anatomy scan is usually performed around week 20.
- Third Trimester (Weeks 28-40): The baby grows rapidly in weight. Lungs mature, and the baby positions itself for birth.
Accuracy Factors
While our pregnancy due date calculator is highly accurate based on the data provided, only about 4-5% of babies are born on their exact due date. Most are born within a week before or after.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
A: It is as accurate as the information provided. If you have a regular 28-day cycle and know your LMP, it is very precise. However, an ultrasound scan in the first trimester is the most accurate way to date a pregnancy.
A: Yes. Your doctor might adjust your due date after an ultrasound if the baby measures significantly larger or smaller than expected for your calculated gestational age.
A: If you don’t know your LMP, it’s best to consult a doctor. They can perform an ultrasound to measure the baby (Crown-Rump Length) and estimate the gestational age.
A: IVF dates are more precise because the exact moment of fertilization is known. LMP calculations assume ovulation happens on day 14, which isn’t always true. Therefore, the IVF calculation is the preferred method for assisted pregnancies.
A: Technically, a full-term pregnancy is 40 weeks, which is actually closer to 10 lunar months (28 days each) or about 9 calendar months and 1 week.
A: Viability refers to the stage of pregnancy (usually around 24 weeks) when a baby has a chance of survival if born prematurely, thanks to modern neonatal care.
