Medplore QR Tool Documentation
Version 2.1 – Your client-side tool for generating and scanning medical QR codes.
Introduction
The Medplore QR tool is a powerful, browser-based utility designed for both patients and healthcare professionals. It provides a secure and private way to create and read QR codes containing essential health information. Because the tool runs entirely on your device, no personal data is ever transmitted or stored on a server, ensuring complete confidentiality.
How It Works
Generating a QR Code
- Select a Template: Choose a pre-defined template that matches the type of data you need to encode, such as patient details or medication information.
- Enter Information: Fill in the form with the relevant data. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are required.
- Generate: Click the “Generate QR Code” button. The code will appear on your screen instantly.
- Save: Use the “Download PNG” button to save a high-quality image of your QR code for printing or digital use.
Scanning a QR Code
- Choose a Method: You can either use your device’s camera to scan a live QR code or upload an existing QR code image from your device.
- Scan or Upload: Point your camera at the code or select the image file. The tool will automatically detect and decode the information.
- View Results: The scanned data is then displayed in a clean, formatted, and easy-to-read card, helping you quickly understand the encoded information.
Available QR Code Templates
To make data entry simple and standardized, the tool includes several templates for specific use cases.
Patient Record
This template is ideal for creating a comprehensive emergency medical ID QR code. It can store a patient’s name, date of birth, blood type, and existing medical conditions, providing first responders with critical information when every second counts.
Medication Information
Use this template to encode the details of a specific drug. It’s a convenient way to produce a medication QR code that contains dosage, frequency, and special instructions, helping to reduce errors and improve patient adherence.
Prescription
This allows a provider to generate a digital prescription QR code containing all necessary details, including the prescriber’s information, patient name, medication, and refills. This can streamline pharmacy workflows and enhance verification processes.
Allergy Information
Quickly produce an allergy alert QR code that lists a patient’s known allergies and the nature of their reactions. This is essential for patient safety in clinical settings and can be attached to patient files or wristbands.
Laboratory Results
For sharing diagnostic data, this template can generate a lab test QR code. It allows for the encoding of key results from a lab report, making it easier to share information between departments or with a consulting provider.
Update Log
Version 2.1 (Current)
- Feature: Added a beautifully formatted, card-style display for scanned QR code results, making the data much easier to read.
- Bug Fix: Resolved an issue where the scanning library (jsQR) would sometimes fail to load, preventing scanner functionality. A check is now in place to report the error clearly.
- Bug Fix: Corrected a JavaScript error that occurred during QR code generation, ensuring the feature is stable and reliable.
Version 2.0
- Critical Fix: Re-engineered the tool’s CSS to be fully scoped within a container class. This prevents all style conflicts when the tool is embedded in a WordPress page.
- Feature: Added the ability to upload a QR code image for scanning, in addition to using the live camera.
- Bug Fix: The “Download PNG” button now correctly saves the QR code image instead of the entire HTML page.
- Enhancement: Added a visual “viewfinder” to the camera scanner to improve user experience.
- Enhancement: Added a clear data security warning to ensure users understand the public nature of QR code data.
- Refactor: The entire JavaScript codebase was restructured for improved maintainability, performance, and stability.
Data Privacy and Security
Client-Side Processing: This tool is built with privacy as the top priority. 100% of the data you enter and the QR codes you generate or scan are processed directly in your web browser on your own device. No information is ever sent to, or stored on, any external server.
A Note on Encryption: The QR code standard does not include encryption. Therefore, anyone with a QR scanner can read the information you encode. For this reason, we have removed the previous misleading “encryption” feature and instead urge users to be mindful of the information they choose to encode. Do not place highly sensitive, personal health information in a QR code that will be displayed in a public setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my medical data stored anywhere?
Absolutely not. All processing happens in your browser. No medical information is ever sent to our servers or any third party.
Can I use these QR codes with my phone’s standard camera app?
Yes. However, a standard scanner will only show you the raw, unformatted data string. To see the data presented in a clean, readable format, we recommend using the “Scan” tab of this tool.
What is the best way to print a medical QR code?
For best results, print the QR code with high contrast (black on a white background) and ensure it is large enough to be easily scanned, typically at least 1×1 inch (2.5×2.5 cm). For critical information, consider printing on a durable, waterproof label or card.
